Removalists North Turramurra.

A heavily forested enclave between two creeks, separated from Turramurra in 1994. Home to a sandstone Sphinx carved by a returned soldier in the 1920s.

North Turramurra is a suburb on Sydney's Upper North Shore, in the Ku-ring-gai Council area, sitting on a narrow forested spur between Lovers Jump Creek and Cowan Creek - both of which eventually flow into Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, which forms the suburb's entire northern boundary. The area was almost entirely inaccessible in its early years. The only access road was Ku-ring-gai Chase Road, later known as Cowan Road and now Bobbin Head Road, with side roads like Miowera, Milton and Murrua Roads described at the time as little better than bush tracks. There was no street lighting until electricity arrived in the early 1920s, and residents without a car faced a genuinely difficult commute - a long walk to the station for the early morning train to Milsons Point, then a ferry to Circular Quay, and the same dark walk home at night.

Turramurra North Public School opened in October 1914 and quickly became the social hub of what was then a semi-rural area of orchards, dairies, poultry farms and market gardens. In 1924 a grandson of early landholder Samuel King started a bus service to North Turramurra - the buses broke down often enough that passengers sometimes had to push them over the rougher sections of road. The suburb remained semi-rural until 1950, when the NSW Housing Commission resumed land in the Keats Road area and built houses there in 1958 and 1959, with further major subdivisions through the 1960s. North Turramurra did not become a separate suburb from Turramurra until it was officially gazetted on 5 August 1994.

The suburb is home to the Sphinx Memorial inside Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park - a 1.5-metre-high replica of the Great Sphinx of Egypt, carved from sandstone in the 1920s by returned soldier William Shirley in memory of fallen comrades, and accessible via the Sphinx Track. North Turramurra is a popular starting point for bushwalkers heading to Bobbin Head and the upper reaches of Cowan Creek. Around 92% of residents are owners rather than renters - one of the highest owner-occupier rates of any Sydney suburb - and wallabies are a regular sight in the substantial backyards that back onto the forested valleys. The small village shopping strip has built a strong local reputation in recent years, with a well-regarded IGA and several cafes drawing comparisons to a country village rather than a Sydney suburb.

Bobbin Head Road access, the bushland enclave, and what moving in North Turramurra involves

Bobbin Head Road is the single main access route into North Turramurra, and the suburb's narrow spur geography between two creeks means there is no useful alternative route in or out. For any North Turramurra move, Billy plans the approach via Bobbin Head Road regardless of which direction the job is heading - there genuinely is no other practical way in for a removal truck. The village shopping strip generates some local traffic around the school and IGA, but the suburb is otherwise quiet by Upper North Shore standards.

The forested valley terrain means many properties back directly onto bushland reserve, and driveways on the streets closest to the national park boundary - Miowera Road, Murrua Road, and the upper sections of Bobbin Head Road - can have significant gradient and limited turning space. Billy assesses access for any North Turramurra property near the bush boundary at quoting stage. The high owner-occupier rate means many homes have been held by the same family for decades, which often means more volume and more careful handling of items that have not moved in a long time.

Bushfire risk is a genuine consideration for some North Turramurra properties given the heavily forested surrounds - this occasionally affects access during fire danger periods over summer, and Billy stays aware of total fire ban days when a job falls during the warmer months. For moves heading toward the rest of the Upper North Shore or the city, the connection back through Turramurra to the Pacific Highway is the practical route.

Common questions about moving in North Turramurra

North Turramurra sits on a narrow forested spur between Lovers Jump Creek and Cowan Creek, both of which flow into Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Bobbin Head Road is the only practical through-route for the suburb - there is no useful alternative for a removal truck regardless of direction. This was even more pronounced historically, when the early access roads were described as little better than bush tracks.
