Mona Vale was known to the Garigal people as Bongin Bongin, and the main beach itself carried that name well into the twentieth century. The first land grants in the wider Pittwater district were not made until April 1813, and the 700 acres that now form Mona Vale were granted to Robert Campbell, a Sydney merchant and politician, surveyed the following year. Campbell is generally thought to have named the area after a town in his native Scotland, though no one has ever definitively pinned down which one. Long before it became the residential and commercial hub it is today, Mona Vale was a market gardening area - tomatoes grown in glasshouses were the local speciality - and residential development did not really begin in earnest until after the Second World War.
