Cronulla's name comes from the Gweagal word kurranulla, generally translated as "place of the pink seashells" - the Gweagal were a clan of the Dharawal people who lived along this stretch of coast for thousands of years before European settlement, with evidence of occupation dating back over 8,000 years. Explorers Matthew Flinders and George Bass mapped the coastline and Port Hacking estuary in 1796 in their small boat Tom Thumb, and the suburb's southernmost point, Bass and Flinders Point, still carries their names. Surveyor Robert Dixon formally named the beaches in 1827-28, though early spellings varied - the schooner Venus, wrecked here in 1852, was reported in newspapers as having gone down at "Cooranulla."

Cronulla is the only Sydney beach reachable directly by train, a genuine point of local pride, and it remains the original home suburb of the NRL's Cronulla Sharks. Captain Joseph Henry Rounce Spingall became the area's first resident of note in 1888, building the two-storey Oriental Guest House on land above where the North Cronulla Hotel now sits. Cronulla is a peninsula framed by Botany Bay, Bate Bay, Port Hacking, and Gunnamatta Bay, and that geography is exactly what makes it a genuinely sought-after place to live - and, for the same reason, a place where people who move here tend to stay for years.

Cronulla has the access characteristics of a beach suburb at the end of a peninsula - limited parking, varying lift situations in the beachside apartments, and a morning surge of beach traffic that affects the start time. The beachside apartments have their own access challenges - limited street parking, older buildings with no lift, and building management requirements for the newer towers. Family homes on the residential streets are more straightforward but still benefit from a team that has done the drive before and knows the area.
