Parramatta is Australia's second-oldest European settlement, founded by Governor Arthur Phillip in November 1788, barely two months after the First Fleet landed at Sydney Cove. Phillip named the site Rose Hill, having walked there with a survey party after the soil around Sydney proved too poor to feed the new colony - Parramatta's river flats were the alternative. The settlement was renamed Parramatta in June 1791, taking the Burramattagal name for the area - translated as "the place where the eels lie down" or "head of the river." James Ruse, a former convict, received the colony's first land grant here in 1789 by proving he could grow enough food to feed his own family. The site is now Experiment Farm Cottage.
Old Government House, in Parramatta Park, is the oldest surviving public building in Australia and was the country residence for the colony's first ten Governors. Today Parramatta is a proper CBD in its own right - high-rise apartment towers, commercial offices, and a growing residential population that has made it one of the busiest moving markets in Western Sydney.
