Palm Beach takes its name from the cabbage tree palms, Livistona australis, that grew throughout the area and which the Aboriginal people who lived here for thousands of years put to genuine practical use - twisting the bark into fishing lines, patching canoes with the fronds, and roofing temporary shelters with the leaves. Barrenjoey Head, the dramatic headland at the suburb's northern tip, was named "Barrenjuee" by Governor Phillip in March 1788, generally translated as "little kangaroo" or "little wallaby" - the spelling settled into its current form, Barrenjoey, only in 1966. A customs house was built at the base of the headland in 1843 specifically to discourage smugglers bringing goods into Broken Bay, and the sandstone lighthouse that still stands there today, designed by colonial architect James Barnet, was first lit in 1881.

Palm Beach is as far north as the Northern Beaches goes - and for most Sydney removalists, it is either an afterthought or a reason to inflate the quote. For Billy and Jet, it is just another job on home turf. The homes here range from weekenders and modest beach cottages to serious prestige properties with harbour or ocean frontage. Many of the elevated streets have steep driveway access and limited space for a truck to manoeuvre - exactly the kind of suburb that benefits from a removalist who has been there before and knows what to expect.
