Gordon is the commercial and administrative heart of the Upper North Shore - the suburb where Ku-ring-gai Council is based, where Pacific Highway connects to the main residential roads running east and west, and where the North Shore train line has a station busy enough to have supported apartment development that sits alongside the suburb's established family home character. It is a suburb in transition, and that transition creates two genuinely different moving environments within the same postcode.

Along the Pacific Highway and around Gordon station, newer apartment buildings have appeared alongside the traditional mid-rise blocks that predate the current development wave. These buildings have strata management requirements - goods lift bookings, moving windows, loading dock access - that are sorted in advance. Away from the station corridor and into the residential streets east and west of the highway, Gordon is classic Upper North Shore: large blocks, Federation and inter-war homes, established gardens, and the moving volume that comes with decades of proper occupation.

Gordon station also has the distinction of being home to one of Sydney's largest urban bat colonies in the reserve near Middle Harbour, which tells you something about the suburb's relationship with its natural surroundings. Gordon splits between the apartment buildings close to the station - goods lifts where they exist, walk-ups where they don't, with the access characteristics of the building's era - and the family homes on the residential streets further back. The streets further from Gordon Centre become progressively quieter and more suburban, with the driveway conditions typical of the Upper North Shore.
