In January 2005, workmen excavating beside a bus shelter on Ocean Street uncovered a skeleton roughly 4,000 years old. He had been speared to death and is now known to researchers as "Narrabeen Man." His remains were eventually reburied in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in 2008. It's a genuinely striking reminder of how long this stretch of coast has been occupied - the Guringai people lived around Narrabeen Lagoon for thousands of years, describing it as "the heart of our world." Several theories compete for the name's origin: an Aboriginal word for swan, a corruption of "narrow beans" eaten by early colonists, or - in the version most often repeated - named after Narrabine, a young Aboriginal woman who helped colonial soldiers pursue nearby bushrangers.
Narrabeen is one of those Northern Beaches suburbs that gets under your skin.
