Avalon takes its name from Arthurian legend - the mythical island where King Arthur was said to have been taken to recover from his wounds after his final battle, and according to some versions of the story, where he was ultimately buried. Land developer Arthur J. Small chose the name in 1921 when he subdivided the area, presumably drawn to the idea of an earthly paradise as a selling point for beachside blocks. Long before that, the land had passed through the hands of Father John Joseph Therry, Australia's first Catholic priest, who held grants covering most of the peninsula from Newport to Whale Beach - holdings that were eventually sold after his death to help fund the rebuilding of St Mary's Cathedral in the city.
