Home to the first regional shopping centre built in NSW - opened in 1957, rebuilt in 2010 as one of Australia's largest retail developments.
Top Ryde is a locality within the suburb of Ryde, in the City of Ryde local government area, centred on the corner of Devlin Street and Blaxland Road - the site of one of the most significant pieces of retail history in NSW. The original Top Ryde Shopping Centre opened on 14 November 1957, officially by Premier Joseph Cahill, and was the first regional shopping centre built in NSW and only the second in all of Australia. The concept came from Peter Benjamin of the A.J. Benjamin's retailing family in Chatswood, who travelled to the United States in 1953 and visited around 20 American-style shopping centres before returning to Sydney to develop the idea locally with Peter Yeomans, who had been studying the American shopping centre model in Detroit.
Yeomans designed the centre's distinctive apricot brick, windowless walls, and vertical divisions, while Benjamin worked on the retail layout. The site itself - bounded by Blaxland Road, Pope, Tucker and Devlin Streets - had been gradually acquired by Ryde Council with the original intention of building a village centre, and at the time of purchase was mostly open ground with a few cottages and the corner of the playground for Ryde Primary School. A new company, Regional Centres Limited, was formed specifically to acquire the land and build the centre, and architects Whitehead and Payne were engaged to document the design once the directors of A.J. Benjamin brought Yeomans back to Sydney in 1955.
The current Top Ryde City opened on 20 August 2010 after a complete redevelopment, becoming one of Australia's largest retail developments on the same 3.5-hectare site - now with 78,125 square metres of retail space across four levels of retail circling a six-storey atrium, around 300 stores, and over 3,000 undercover car spaces. Construction included three vehicular tunnels under Devlin Street for uninterrupted carpark access, plus pedestrian bridges at the northern and southern ends of Devlin Street. The centre is now owned by Blackstone and houses the Ryde Library and Ryde Planning and Business Centre alongside its retail tenants. The surrounding area has seen significant apartment development drawn by the shopping centre's amenity and the M2 and Epping Road connections nearby.
Devlin Street and Blaxland Road are the two main roads framing the Top Ryde City precinct, and both carry significant retail traffic throughout the day - not just peak hours. For any move near the shopping centre, Billy avoids attempting to hold a position on either road and instead works from a quieter side street. The three vehicular tunnels under Devlin Street are specific to shopping centre carpark access and not relevant to general truck routing, but they are a useful landmark for confirming you are in the right precinct.
The apartment development that has grown up around Top Ryde City in recent years means strata logistics are now a standard part of many moves in this immediate area - lift booking, loading dock access, and building manager notification are all confirmed at quoting stage for any Top Ryde apartment move. The older residential streets further from the shopping centre, particularly toward Blaxland Road's western stretch, are more typical freestanding homes with standard driveway access.
Public transport in Top Ryde is bus-based rather than rail - the nearest train stations are West Ryde and Meadowbank, with Macquarie Park metro station also a practical option for some addresses. This means most Top Ryde moves are entirely road-based with no rail-related access complications, which simplifies planning compared to some of the metro-adjacent suburbs elsewhere in Sydney.
We also cover neighbouring Ryde, West Ryde, and Meadowbank regularly.
