Removalists Putney.

Named after the Thames suburb because the Parramatta River was once called the 'Thames of the Antipodes'. Home to Sydney's last surviving punt.

Putney is a riverside suburb in the City of Ryde, sitting on the northern bank of the Parramatta River roughly 14 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. The area was originally known as Eastern Farms and then Kissing Point - one of the very first European settlements outside Sydney and Parramatta, established in 1792. Brewer James Squire moved here that same year and founded the Malt Shovel brewery near Kissing Point, helping establish what would become Australia's first commercial brewing operation. The current name was applied later, drawn from Putney on the River Thames in London - the Parramatta River was once known as the 'Thames of the Antipodes', and the naming pattern extended to neighbouring suburbs Greenwich, Woolwich, and Henley, all borrowed from real Thames-side locations.

The 1880s were the decade that defined Putney's character as a sporting and social destination. From 1847, the stretch of river between Kissing Point and Uhr's Point hosted World Championship sculling races, drawing thousands of Sydneysiders to the riverbank to watch international rowing competitions through to the 1930s. Two world champion rowers - Beach in 1884 and Kemp in 1887 - have streets named after them in Putney today. The suburb was advertised at the time as having the best views of the championship rowing course, a selling point used in early land sales.

Putney's river crossing has a continuous history stretching back to before 1896, when a hand-operated punt first connected Putney Point with Mortlake Point. A cable ferry replaced it around 1927 - officially the Mortlake Ferry, more commonly known as the Putney Punt - and remains in operation today as the last surviving punt anywhere in the Sydney metropolitan area, connecting Hilly Street in Mortlake with Pellisier Road in Putney. The Kissing Point ferry wharf provides a 20-minute Parramatta River ferry service to Circular Quay. The Bennelong Memorial on Waterview Street marks the spot of that 1792 first private settlement, and much of the peninsula today is occupied by Putney Park.

Morrison Road, the peninsula streets, and what moving in Putney involves

Morrison Road runs along Putney's northern boundary and is the main route in and out of the suburb, connecting to Church Street at the western edge and through to the broader City of Ryde road network. The Putney shopping centre and Putney Public School sit just inside the suburb boundary off this main road, and Billy positions the truck from a quieter side street for any move near these local hubs rather than holding on Morrison Road itself.

Properties on the peninsula closer to the river - particularly those backing onto Kissing Point Bay or near Putney Park - tend to be a mix of older-style family homes and newer designer duplexes, reflecting decades of gradual redevelopment along the waterfront. Streets in this section can have river views and the access variation that comes with waterfront topography - Billy assesses driveway and street access for any Putney property near the river frontage at quoting stage.

The Mortlake car ferry is a genuinely useful option for moves heading to or from the southern side of the Parramatta River, since it avoids a longer road route via the Gladesville or Ryde bridges. It is not suitable for a loaded removal truck, but for smaller deliveries or vans it is worth knowing about. For full house removals, Billy plans the route via the standard road network rather than the ferry given vehicle size restrictions.

We also cover neighbouring Meadowbank, Gladesville, Ryde, and Tennyson Point regularly.

Common questions about moving in Putney

The Parramatta River was historically known as the 'Thames of the Antipodes', and several riverside suburbs took their names from real Thames-side locations in London - Putney, Greenwich, Woolwich, and Henley among them. Before the name Putney was adopted, the area was known as Eastern Farms and then Kissing Point.

A cable ferry, officially the Mortlake Ferry, that has connected Putney Point with Mortlake Point since around 1927 (a hand-operated punt predates it from before 1896). It is the last surviving punt anywhere in the Sydney metropolitan area, though it is not suitable for a loaded removal truck.
