The suburb's name reflects a nineteenth-century convention of naming Australian places after prominent British figures and locations — Beaconsfield in Kent was the title of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, who was elevated to the peerage as Earl of Beaconsfield in 1876. The suburb was part of the broader Waterloo municipality in the early colonial period and developed as a worker's residential area adjacent to the Alexandria industrial corridor.
