Removalists Clontarf.

One of Sydney's most tightly held waterfront suburbs - and a move that requires knowing the ground.

Clontarf sits on the north-eastern foreshore of Middle Harbour, 13 kilometres north-east of the Sydney CBD, wedged between Seaforth and Balgowlah Heights in a small, affluent pocket that covers less than one square kilometre. With a population of around 1,746 people, it is one of the most tightly held residential addresses on the Northern Beaches - the kind of suburb where families stay for decades and properties rarely reach the market. The name is Irish in origin, taken from the area near Dublin that was the site of the famous 1014 Battle of Clontarf, a name carried by Irish settlers who saw something familiar in the sheltered harbour cove.

The suburb's history as a pleasure ground makes for an interesting contrast with the exclusivity it holds today. In the mid-1800s, Clontarf was a destination for working Sydneysiders who arrived by ferry in their thousands for weekend picnics - at its peak, crowds of up to 5,000 would come ashore for a day out. It was at Clontarf in 1868 that the first royal visitor to Australia, Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, was shot by an Irish nationalist at a picnic. He survived, the bullet lodging in his braces, and the golden probe used to remove it is still on display at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital museum. A new bridge in 1958 made the suburb far more accessible and residential development followed - by the late twentieth century it had transformed into one of Sydney's most desirable harbour addresses.

Life in Clontarf today centres on the water. Clontarf Beach has a tidal swimming enclosure, a marina, and Clontarf Reserve along the foreshore with barbecues and picnic facilities. Castle Rock and Grotto Point offer walking tracks that connect to the broader Manly Scenic Walkway. The suburb has no schools of its own - families here send children to Balgowlah or Seaforth schools - and the commercial offering is similarly minimal. Residents who choose Clontarf are choosing harbour living above everything else, and the homes here reflect that priority.

The Spit Bridge, a compact street network, and why local knowledge matters in Clontarf

The Spit Bridge is the only practical vehicle route into and out of Clontarf. Every removal truck working in the suburb uses it, and the scheduled openings for tall-masted vessels can hold traffic for 15 to 20 minutes. Billy checks the opening roster before any Clontarf job and plans the timing around it - the opening schedule is public but it is one of those pieces of local knowledge that removalists unfamiliar with the Northern Beaches simply do not know to check.

Clontarf is compact and hilly, and the streets running down toward the harbour have limited space for a truck to manoeuvre. Some of the waterfront properties and those on the higher streets above the beach have driveways that drop steeply from the road, and the truck needs to hold its position on the street while furniture is carried. Properties with direct access to the water via a staircase or boardwalk require carrying items over a longer distance than the address alone suggests. Billy visits or assesses access during quoting on Clontarf properties so the logistics are mapped out before anything is loaded.

The marina end of the suburb near Clontarf Marina has different access considerations to the foreshore reserve end. Parking near the marina area can be difficult on weekends when the beach draws visitors, and a morning start that gets the truck positioned before the car park fills is worth planning for. For the residential streets higher up the hill, the access is generally better but the gradient from kerb to front door on some of these properties is the main variable to account for in the time estimate.
