Balgowlah takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning "north harbour," a reference to its position relative to Port Jackson, formally applied in 1832. Before that the area was known to the Aboriginal people as Jilling, and in the early days of European settlement it was sometimes called Little Manly. Sir Edmund Barton, Australia's first Prime Minister, lived in a building called Whitehall on White Street - since 2004 it has been home to the Norwegian Seamen's Church, a genuinely unexpected piece of Scandinavian history tucked into a Northern Beaches side street.

Balgowlah sits just back from Manly and splits into two completely different moving environments along Sydney Road. The village end around Stockland Balgowlah on Condamine Street is flat, accessible, and about as straightforward as moving gets on the Northern Beaches. The Heights is a different proposition entirely - Balgowlah Heights climbs steeply away from the flat toward Tania Park and the Middle Harbour foreshore, and the streets on the upper section have driveways and approaches that would give most removalists pause.
