Concord sits on the Parramatta River roughly halfway between Sydney and Parramatta, around 10 kilometres west of the CBD in the City of Canada Bay. The first land grants here date to 1793, when free settlers who had arrived on the ship Bellona received grants in an area then known as Liberty Plains. In that same year a grant was made to six non-commissioned officers in what was officially described as 'a district to be distinguished in future by the name of Concord' - a deliberate, almost ironic naming choice, since Concord takes its name from Concord, Massachusetts, the site of the first military engagement of the American Revolutionary War. The choice is generally credited to Lieutenant-Governor Francis Grose, who had served in that conflict, and the name is thought to express a hope for harmony between soldiers and the new free settlers in the colony.

Soon after the Government Farm was established at Rose Hill (Parramatta) around 1792, a halfway point on the 24-kilometre trek between Sydney and Parramatta was selected as a staging post - the Longbottom Stockade, where prisoners making the journey on foot were held overnight. The site is now St Luke's Park and the sports fields around Lucas Street and Parramatta Road. Concord's identity as the inner west's parklands suburb has deep roots - Queen Elizabeth Park (renamed from Concord Park to mark the Queen's 1954 visit), Henley Park on the site of a former 1938 cemetery, and Majors Bay Reserve all give the suburb a genuinely high ratio of green space to housing.

Concord has had an unexpectedly prominent role in Australian screen history - the long-running drama All Saints was set in a fictional hospital filmed largely around the real Concord Repatriation General Hospital, and Packed to the Rafters used Riverview Street and other Concord locations for its central family home. The Bushells tea company moved its head office to 160 Burwood Road on the riverfront in the mid-1950s, where the building still stands. Around 14,500 people call Concord home, in a mix of established family homes on wide, leafy streets and the more recent waterside developments toward Cabarita and Breakfast Point.

Concord is one of the more straightforward inner-west suburbs for truck access - wide residential streets, family homes on good-sized blocks, and the kind of generous front access that the inner-city terraces rarely offer. The homes here tend to be long-term owner-occupied, which means the moves are full ones. The river peninsula corridor is familiar ground for Billy and Jet - Concord's wide streets and generous blocks make it one of the more straightforward inner-west suburbs to work in.
