Industrial wasteland to one of Sydney's most densely populated suburbs in under two decades. 13,000 residents on 1 square kilometre of Parramatta River peninsula.
Rhodes is a suburb on the southern bank of the Parramatta River in the City of Canada Bay local government area, approximately 16 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It occupies a peninsula bounded by the Parramatta River to the north and west, Brays Bay to the east, and Homebush Bay to the south-west - a geography that makes it compact but waterfront on multiple sides. The suburb covers just over one square kilometre but houses around 13,000 residents, giving it one of the highest population densities of any suburb in Sydney outside the CBD. That density is entirely a product of the last two decades.
Rhodes was industrial wasteland for most of its modern history. The peninsula was used for heavy chemical manufacturing from the early twentieth century, and contamination from Union Carbide's operations here became a significant environmental remediation project from the 1980s onward - one of the largest contaminated site cleanups in NSW history. The transformation from contaminated industrial land to high-rise residential began in the early 2000s and has continued at pace. The Rhodes Waterside Shopping Centre, the waterfront promenades, and the apartment towers that define the suburb today are all built on what was, within living memory, a fenced-off industrial site. The $80 million Rhodes Recreation Centre, including indoor courts and a gym, opened in October 2025 as part of the ongoing Billbergia development program.
Rhodes station on the T9 Inner West and Leppington line provides direct rail access to the CBD in around 25 minutes. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway along the Parramatta River foreshore is the suburb's main community open space. Demographically Rhodes is one of Sydney's most internationally diverse suburbs - the 2021 census recorded 43.2% of residents with Chinese ancestry, the highest proportion of any suburb in NSW. The suburb continues to grow: Billbergia's $3.2 billion Rhodes Bay Waterfront Masterplan, which involves eight residential towers of 22 to 40 storeys on the northern tip of the peninsula, is proposed for staged construction from late 2026.
Almost every move in Rhodes involves a high-rise apartment building, and that means strata logistics are not an optional extra - they are the core of how the job is planned. Lift booking windows, loading dock height restrictions, building manager notification requirements, and in some cases COI documentation from the removalist's insurer are standard across the Rhodes towers. Billy confirms all building requirements at quoting stage and handles the communication with building management directly so nothing is discovered on moving day.
The peninsula road layout creates a specific challenge for removal trucks. Rhodes has limited road access - the main entry points are via Concord Road from the south and the Rhodes overpass from the east. Once on the peninsula, the internal road network is tight and built around the shopping centre and apartment towers rather than truck access. Parking a removal truck near a specific tower requires knowing which access points are available for that building and what the time restrictions are on surrounding streets. Billy researches the specific building access before confirming any Rhodes booking.
The volume of moves in and out of Rhodes is consistently high - the suburb's density, young demographic, and rental market mean turnover is significant year-round. End of lease moves in Rhodes often involve tight deadlines tied to strata handback requirements, where the lift booking and loading dock slots are fixed and the job has to run to a tighter clock than a house move. Billy plans the day around the confirmed access windows rather than working to a general start time.
We also cover neighbouring Meadowbank, Ryde, and Concord regularly.

"Moved out of a Rhodes high-rise - Billy had the lift booked, knew the loading dock height, and had everything out within the building's access window. Exactly what you need when the building is running to a strict schedule."- Wei and Sarah, Rhodes apartment move

Yes - virtually every building in Rhodes requires lift booking, loading dock access confirmation, and building manager notification before moving day. Some buildings also require a certificate of insurance from the removalist. Billy handles all of this at quoting stage and confirms every access requirement before the booking is finalised.
