The original Pennant Hills - the name moved with the railway station, and the area around Thompsons Corner became West Pennant Hills.
West Pennant Hills is a suburb 25 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD in the Hills District, spread across both the Hornsby Shire and The Hills Shire local government areas. It holds the distinction of being the original Pennant Hills - when Sydney was first settled, 'Pennant Hills' referred to the whole range of hills stretching north from Parramatta, and the township was centred on the ridge at the intersection of what is now Pennant Hills and Castle Hill Roads. The name Pennant Hills referred to a flagpole erected on the area's highest point, used to signal the Parramatta garrison when the Governor was travelling through - raising the flag meant the soldiers had to clean up and stop drinking before he arrived. When the railway line bypassed this area in the 1880s and a station was built to the east, the name Pennant Hills moved with the station, and the original township area became West Pennant Hills. The suburb was officially split off as a separate suburb on 23 August 1986.
Thompsons Corner - the locality at the intersection of Castle Hill and Pennant Hills Roads at the heart of the suburb - is named after Andrew Thompson (1773-1810), a convict who received a 100-acre grant here in 1796 opposite the signal station. During Governor Macquarie's tenure, a timber-sawing establishment operated near today's Thompsons Corner. The commercial area here is the suburb's retail hub, with West Pennant Hills Public School also at the corner. A second shopping complex on Coonara Avenue has a Woolworths and restaurants. Cherrybrook railway station to the north, near Castle Hill Road, is the nearest rail connection.
West Pennant Hills has a population of around 16,374 (2021 census) with a median household income of $3,078 per week - one of the higher household income figures in the area. The suburb includes Cumberland State Forest, a significant natural area with walking trails through native bushland, and the Koala Park Sanctuary on Castle Hill Road, which has operated for nearly 80 years. The Great North Walk passes through West Pennant Hills on its way between Sydney and the Hunter Valley. The section of the suburb within The Hills Shire council is colloquially known as West Pennant Hills Valley or simply The Valley.
Castle Hill Road and Pennant Hills Road are the two main arterials through West Pennant Hills, meeting at Thompsons Corner. Both carry significant through-traffic between the Hills District and the northern suburbs. The Thompsons Corner shopping precinct generates pedestrian and parking activity on the surrounding streets during business hours. For any move near the commercial area, Billy positions the truck from a residential side street rather than attempting to hold on either arterial.
The residential streets of West Pennant Hills are predominantly large family homes on generous blocks - this is one of the suburbs in the Hills District where the housing stock reflects the area's long history of orchard and farming land being converted to residential in the postwar period. Large blocks, established trees, and homes that have been in long-term family occupation are typical. This means moves in West Pennant Hills often involve the volume that comes with substantial homes occupied for many years. Billy plans crew size and truck size around the property volume described at quoting stage.
West Pennant Hills Valley in The Hills Shire section of the suburb has a semi-rural character in places - larger properties, longer driveways, and in some sections gated entries. Properties adjacent to Cumberland State Forest on the western side of the suburb can have driveways that approach through significant vegetation. Billy confirms access for any address in The Valley or near the forest boundary at quoting stage. The M2 motorway to the south provides fast freeway access toward the city, and Castle Hill Road connects north toward Castle Hill and the Hills District commercial hubs.
We also cover neighbouring Pennant Hills, Beecroft, Carlingford, and Dural regularly.
