Removalists Wheeler Heights.

Named after one of the first European families in the area - a suburb that spent 27 years fighting to be called a suburb again.

Wheeler Heights is a suburb on Sydney's Northern Beaches, 22 kilometres north-east of the CBD, nestled on a hillside between Collaroy Plateau and Dee Why overlooking Narrabeen Lagoon. The suburb's name comes from the Wheeler family, originally from Somerset, England, who were among the first European settlers in the area. James Wheeler (1810-1890), a free settler, purchased 150 acres in January 1842 - 100 acres on South Creek and 50 acres on Narrabeen Lagoon - and his family remained in the area for generations. The suburb has an unusual administrative history: it was first declared a suburb in 1977 with postcode 2097, downgraded to a locality within Collaroy in 1984, and restored as a suburb again in 2011 after sustained community lobbying. Local residents had never stopped calling it a suburb through the intervening years.

The 1917 land development that shaped much of Wheeler Heights advertised it as the Superb View Estate - a real estate developer named Sir Arthur Rickard marketed new lots on streets including Lantana Avenue, Rose Avenue, and Veterans Parade (originally Plateau Road). The views that made it a selling point then are still a defining characteristic today. Many homes in Wheeler Heights enjoy elevated outlooks over Narrabeen Lagoon and glimpses of the ocean beyond. The hilly terrain means sea breezes are a genuine feature of the suburb rather than a marketing claim, and some residents describe being able to hear the distant crash of waves at night.

Wheeler Heights has a population of around 3,200 and very few commercial facilities of its own beyond a small cluster of local shops and cafes for daily needs. Collaroy, Narrabeen, and Dee Why are the nearest commercial centres. Jamison Park, a large 42.8-hectare natural area along the southern edge of Narrabeen Lagoon, is accessible from Wheeler Heights via James Wheeler Place and South Creek Road and is one of the Northern Beaches' significant natural spaces for walking and cycling. The final section of the Narrabeen Lagoon Bush Trail opened in February 2015.

Hilly terrain, lagoon-edge streets, and what a Wheeler Heights move requires

Wheeler Heights is built on the slopes above Narrabeen Lagoon, and the hilly terrain is the defining characteristic of the suburb from a moving perspective. Streets in the suburb vary significantly in gradient, and properties with lagoon views often have driveways that reflect the slope of the land they sit on. Billy assesses driveway gradient and truck positioning for any Wheeler Heights address where the slope is a variable. The streets in the upper sections of the suburb above Veterans Parade and Lantana Avenue are the most elevated and often require the truck to hold on the road while furniture is carried.

The lagoon-edge streets at the lower end of the suburb, close to Jamison Park and South Creek, are flatter and more accessible. These properties have good kerb access in most cases and the truck can often reach a useful position directly in front of the property. Jamison Park itself generates foot traffic and cyclists accessing the lagoon trail, and for addresses near James Wheeler Place on park weekends the loading position is planned around trail user activity. A weekday start is generally more straightforward than a Saturday morning here.

The approach to Wheeler Heights from the south is via the Pittwater Road and Collaroy Plateau Road connection, which are manageable at most times. From Dee Why, the Allambie Road and Collaroy Plateau connection provides a quick cross-suburb route. Billy knows these corridors from many years of work across the Northern Beaches between Dee Why and Narrabeen. Wheeler Heights moves frequently cross between this suburb and Collaroy, Dee Why, and Narrabeen, and those routes are well-established.
