Collaroy covers two genuinely distinct environments. Down at the beach along the Pacific Parade and Collaroy Beach strip, apartment blocks from the post-war decades sit directly behind the sand with the access characteristics of their era - compact lifts where they exist, narrow stairwells, and parking that fills from 7am on any good weather weekend morning. Up on Collaroy Plateau - the elevated tableland sitting above the beach suburb - the character shifts entirely to family homes on generous blocks with the wide tree-lined streets and the community feel of a suburb that has stayed largely unchanged since the 1970s.
Pittwater Road is the main arterial connecting Collaroy to both Dee Why in the south and Narrabeen in the north. It carries the through-traffic of the entire peninsula during peak hours and is one of those roads where a removal truck trying to position for a direct load during business hours is fighting a losing battle.
