Permanent, peaceful bushland living on the Upper North Shore - the name says it and the suburb delivers.
East Killara is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, approximately 15 kilometres north-west of the CBD in the Ku-ring-gai Council local government area. Killara is an Aboriginal word meaning permanent or always there, and East Killara was gazetted as a separate suburb from Killara on 5 August 1994. The suburb covers 3.2 square kilometres and has a population of around 2,900 - one of the smaller and more tightly held residential communities on the Upper North Shore. It is bordered by Garigal National Park to the east and the Eastern Arterial Road and Birdwood Avenue to the west.
The main road through the suburb is Koola Avenue, which runs from Birdwood Avenue through to Albany Crescent and provides the primary access spine for the residential streets that branch off it. There is a small local shopping strip with the essential daily services - the suburb is not commercially self-sufficient but doesn't need to be given its proximity to Killara and Lindfield. Killara High School sits on the Koola Avenue corridor and is one of the main public landmarks. The bushland setting is pronounced on the eastern side of the suburb where properties back onto Garigal National Park.
East Killara shares postcode 2071 with Killara and has the same general demographic character - established families, high owner-occupancy, and a strong preference for the quiet, leafy Upper North Shore lifestyle that drew people here in the first place. The housing stock built up mainly through the 1950s to 1980s on the standard Upper North Shore block sizes of the era. It is the kind of suburb where people stay for a long time, which means moves here are often significant ones - decades of accumulated furniture and effects from long-term family homes.
East Killara is a practical suburb for a removal truck across most of its area. Koola Avenue provides clear access and the residential streets are wide enough to hold a truck comfortably while loading and unloading. Most properties have off-street driveways that can be used, and the absence of through-traffic on the internal streets means the truck can take up positioning without competition. The main variable is volume - long-term family homes with 20 or 30 years of accumulated furniture require a proper load plan, and Jet maps this out at quoting stage.
The streets that back onto Garigal National Park on the eastern edge of the suburb are the ones that warrant a closer look at access. Some of these properties have long driveways running through established gardens to reach the house, and the national park boundary means there is no through-route. Billy checks driveway access and truck positioning for any property on the Garigal boundary during quoting so the crew arrives knowing exactly what the carry looks like.
The Eastern Arterial Road on the western boundary of East Killara carries significant commuter traffic at morning and afternoon peaks, connecting the Upper North Shore to Chatswood and the lower North Shore. Any move that involves the truck entering or leaving via Birdwood Avenue and the Eastern Arterial should account for this timing. Billy plans East Killara jobs so the truck is positioned before the morning peak and, where the job spans the full day, the second run avoids the afternoon outbound peak on the arterial.
