Merrylands sits around 25 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in what is now the Cumberland City Council area, on Dharug land occupied by the Burramattagal people around Parramatta, the Boot-Bain-Ora near Wentworthville, and the Toongagal at Toongabbie before European settlement. The suburb's name comes from the English home of Arthur Todd Holroyd, a politician and explorer who acquired land here in 1855 and went on to give his own name to the neighbouring suburb of Holroyd. Holroyd suggested the Merrylands name himself and became the first mayor of the municipality when it was established in 1872 - before that, the area had been known locally as Sherwood Scrubs.
Merrylands Railway Station opened on 6 July 1878, the fifth station to open along the Parramatta to Liverpool railway section, following Fairfield, Cabramatta, Guildford, and Canley Vale. The shopping strip that grew up around the station retains a genuine art deco character in many of its 1930s and 1940s buildings, and Stockland Merrylands today anchors a busy commercial precinct with supermarkets and department stores alongside the older streetscape. St Raphael's, on the corner of Warwick Road and Merrylands Road, is a uniquely designed Catholic micro-cathedral in a conventional-modern neo-Gothic style - conceived by Fr Valerijan Jenko and consecrated in 1973 by an assistant bishop from Ljubljana, making it one of the more architecturally distinctive churches in Western Sydney.
Merrylands has produced a genuinely notable list of Australians given its size - Betty Cuthbert, the Olympic gold medal sprinter, was born here, and the suburb has also been home to figures across sport and music in the decades since.
