Auburn takes its name from a poem - Oliver Goldsmith's 1770 work The Deserted Village, which opens with the line "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain." It is a genuinely odd naming choice in hindsight, given that Auburn went on to become one of Western Sydney's busiest industrial and transport hubs rather than a quiet English village. Long before that, the area was Darug land and a significant meeting place - a marketplace for trade and a "Law Place" used for ceremonies and ritual battles, sitting on the boundary between the inland Darug people and the coastal Eora and Dharawal groups. European settlement began in 1793, when free settlers were granted land here under the name Liberty Plains - a name chosen specifically because, unlike most of the colony at that point, these were free settlers rather than convicts.
The railway arrived in 1877 and transformed Auburn into an industrial centre - brickmaking, pottery, and locomotive manufacturing all grew up around the station. Postwar immigration reshaped the suburb again: refugees from Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland after WWII, followed by waves of Lebanese, Turkish, and Vietnamese settlement from the 1960s onward, and more recently significant Chinese, Afghan, and South Asian communities. Auburn is now one of the most genuinely multicultural suburbs in Australia, and that diversity is part of what makes the place worth understanding properly before you turn up with a truck.

The streets around South Parade and the station precinct are narrow and frequently congested, particularly during peak hours when delivery vehicles use the same roads as residents. Auburn Hospital on Hargrave Road marks the eastern boundary of the denser residential streets.
The area west of Auburn Road has a dense mix of older fibro houses and newer townhouses on tight blocks. A truck needs careful positioning on most jobs, and parking enforcement on the main roads is active throughout the day.
Auburn Botanic Gardens on Chiswick Road is one of the suburb's quieter community assets and the streets around it tend to be among the suburb's calmer residential blocks.
