Removalists Pagewood.

From the Daceyville garden suburb to the GM Holden factory. Interwar homes and the Eastgardens shopping precinct.

Pagewood sits 8 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD in the Bayside Council local government area, bordered by Kingsford and Daceyville to the north, Eastlakes to the west, Botany and Banksmeadow to the south, and Matraville to the east. The suburb's name honours Alderman Fred Page, Mayor of Botany Council in 1928, the same year the suburb was formally named. Development of Pagewood began in 1919 with a housing estate called Monash Gardens — named to honour Field Marshal Sir John Monash, the Australian commander of the Western Front in World War I.

The northern part of Pagewood was originally designed as the southern extension of the Daceyville Garden Suburb, Australia's first public housing scheme built from 1912. The Daceyville scheme was modelled on the British Garden City movement and aimed to provide orderly, spacious, aesthetically pleasing housing for workers as an alternative to the overcrowded Victorian terrace suburbs of the inner city. Many of the street layouts and park arrangements in northern Pagewood remain unchanged from the original Daceyville garden suburb plan. The southern part of the suburb was originally called Dudley — Dudley Street survives in southern Pagewood as the last reminder of that name.

Pagewood has a remarkable twentieth-century industrial history. National Studios opened in 1935 and for nearly thirty years produced Australian and British cinema on the site. In 1940 General Motors Holden purchased the site and operated a car manufacturing plant there until 1981. The Westfield Eastgardens shopping centre was subsequently built on the northern part of the former industrial land, opening in the 1990s and becoming the major retail anchor for the southern eastern suburbs. The suburb now has a residential character dominated by the interwar cottages and homes of the garden suburb era alongside mid-century housing on the broader blocks.

Interwar garden suburb streets with good access and the Eastgardens precinct as the one major traffic consideration

Pagewood's garden suburb heritage gives it wide, planned streets and a generous block character that provides good truck access relative to the density of the inner city suburbs to the north. The interwar cottages and homes on the residential streets have standard driveway setbacks and adequate street parking on most blocks. Most Pagewood residential moves have straightforward access compared to the Victorian terrace suburbs of the inner west.

The Westfield Eastgardens complex generates substantial traffic on Wentworth Avenue and the surrounding roads, particularly on weekends. The approach roads to the residential streets closest to the shopping centre — particularly on the northern boundary near the Kingsford border — carry Westfield visitor traffic on busy retail days. An early start or a weekday move avoids the Eastgardens traffic entirely for any Pagewood property near the shopping centre.

The interwar cottages throughout the garden suburb section of Pagewood have the same internal access considerations as the similar era housing in Rosebery to the north — hallways narrower than modern standards, older timber staircases, and period construction that was not designed around contemporary furniture dimensions. Billy walks every Pagewood cottage during quoting. We also cover neighbouring Kingsford, Maroubra, and Rosebery regularly.
