Bankstown was named in 1797 by Governor John Hunter in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who travelled to Australia with Captain Cook aboard the Endeavour in 1770. The decision followed a Georges River expedition by Matthew Flinders and George Bass in 1795, who reported back favourably on the land along the riverbanks. Hunter inspected the country himself before establishing one of the colony's earliest pioneer settlements, originally recorded as two words, "Bank's Town." Before European settlement, the area was home to the Bediagal people. Their resistance to the new arrivals continued until around 1816, when an epidemic and the loss of several leaders brought it to an end.
During the Second World War, the American presence at Bankstown Aerodrome gave the suburb the wartime nickname "Yankstown." A secret underground bunker built to direct fighter aircraft against air raids still sits hidden beneath a grassy slope near the airport. Bankstown became a city in 1980, with Queen Elizabeth II in attendance for the occasion, and remained the seat of its own council until merging with Canterbury in 2016 to form the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. It is now the most populous suburb in that local government area and one of South-West Sydney's most genuinely diverse communities.
