The more romantic version holds that it commemorates Forby Sutherland, an able seaman on Cook's Endeavour who died during the visit to Botany Bay and was buried on the beach at Kurnell - making him, by most accounts, the first European to die and be buried on Australian soil. Cook himself recorded the death in the ship's log and named the headland Point Sutherland in his memory. The competing theory holds that the name is simply a corruption of 'Southerland' - in 1835, surveyor-general Thomas Mitchell named the first parish south of the Georges River the Parish of Southerland, and a later government gazette rendered it Sutherland, inadvertently losing the original meaning.
