Removalists Miranda.

Named after a Shakespeare character by an estate manager who thought it sounded 'soft, euphonious, musical'. Home to the Sutherland Shire's biggest shopping centre.

Miranda sits in the Sutherland Shire, around 24 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD, and functions as the commercial and retail heart of the southern suburbs. The name comes from an unusually literary source - in the early 1880s, James Murphy, manager of the Holt-Sutherland Company estate that stretched from Sutherland to Cronulla, chose to name the area after Miranda, the heroine of Shakespeare's The Tempest. In a 1921 letter explaining the decision, Murphy wrote that he thought it 'a soft, euphonious, musical and appropriate name for a beautiful place' - a deliberate, almost romantic choice for what was then still largely fruit-growing and poultry-farming land. Some accounts suggest Shakespeare's own character may have been named after Miranda de Ebro, a town in Spain, adding another layer to the suburb's naming history.

Settlement of returned First World War soldiers in the 1920s helped establish Miranda as a genuine residential community beyond its earlier agricultural use. The defining development came decades later with the arrival of Miranda Fair, which opened on 16 March 1964 as one of the earliest fully enclosed shopping centres in New South Wales and was, for a period, the largest covered shopping complex in the state. Acquired by Westfield in 1969 and expanded multiple times since - including a major 1971 redevelopment that introduced David Jones as an anchor tenant - the centre now known as Westfield Miranda spans roughly 128,000 square metres across more than 400 stores, drawing shoppers from across the Sutherland Shire, the St George area, and as far as Wollongong.

The Kingsway, Port Hacking Road, The Boulevarde, and Kiora Road form the main road network through the suburb, meeting at what was once known as the five-ways roundabout - for years officially recorded as the number one black spot in New South Wales for minor traffic accidents, before an $8 million upgrade resolved the intersection in the early 2000s. Miranda railway station sits directly adjacent to the Westfield centre, and the Miranda Hotel on The Kingsway, originally built in the 1950s as the Miranda Rex, remains a local landmark in its own right.

The Shire's commercial centre - we work in the residential streets behind Westfield, not through it, and knowing the difference is part of what makes a Miranda job run well.

The Kingsway, the Westfield precinct, and what moving in Miranda involves

The Kingsway and the immediate Westfield Miranda precinct generate the heaviest commercial traffic in the Sutherland Shire throughout the day, not just at peak hours, given the scale of the shopping centre and its position directly beside the railway station and bus interchange. Billy positions the truck from a quieter residential street for any move near this core rather than attempting to compete for space on The Kingsway itself.

Miranda's housing stock is a genuine mix of low, medium, and high-density residential, reflecting decades of incremental development around the original fruit-growing and poultry-farming land. Apartment buildings closer to the station and the commercial centre bring standard strata access requirements, while the established family homes on the quieter residential streets further out have straightforward driveway access.

Port Hacking Road and the broader Sutherland Shire road network give reasonable access toward Sutherland itself and the Princes Highway corridor for any move heading toward the city or further south. For interstate moves originating from Miranda, the same same-crew approach applies as everywhere else Billy and Jet work.

Also serving nearby: Sutherland, Cronulla, Kogarah, Brighton-Le-Sands, Penshurst and all of Sydney.

Two locals, not a call centre.

When you book a Miranda move, Billy or Jet runs it personally - not a call centre handing you off to whoever's free. They know the Kingsway traffic well enough to plan the truck position and the day before it starts, not figure it out on the morning. On bigger jobs they bring in their own trusted, experienced team, but Billy or Jet is always on site - sometimes both of them. Either way, there's always a named person from The Movers Company accountable for your move. Every item is wrapped and carried properly, and your home - doorframes, walls, floors, at both ends - is protected the whole way through. Fully insured by QBE. No deposit, no cancellation fees.
