Converted warehouses, Sydney Park, and the inner south suburb that shaped the Green Square story.
Alexandria sits 4 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD in the City of Sydney local government area, bounded by Waterloo and Zetland to the north, Rosebery to the east, Botany and Mascot to the south, and St Peters and Newtown to the west. The suburb seceded from the Municipality of Waterloo as a separate municipality in 1868, reflecting its distinct industrial character even in the early colonial period. Alexandria was the manufacturing and warehousing heartland of inner Sydney through the twentieth century, home to the workshops, storage facilities, and light industrial operations that served the city and the nearby Port Botany.
The Green Square urban renewal precinct — covering Alexandria's northern end alongside Zetland, Waterloo, Rosebery, and Beaconsfield — is transforming the former industrial land into a new residential neighbourhood. The 278-hectare project is valued at $22 billion in private development. But Alexandria extends well beyond the Green Square boundary, and the southern half of the suburb retains a character that reflects its industrial heritage — converted warehouse apartments, light industrial businesses operating alongside residential uses, and a built environment that is lower-rise and more varied than the new tower developments to the north.
Sydney Park occupies a large former industrial site on the Alexandra Canal, on the boundary between Alexandria and St Peters. The park opened progressively from 1992 and includes wetlands, cycleways, off-leash dog areas, and the preserved brick kilns from the former brickworks that occupied the site. It is one of the largest parks in inner Sydney and a significant amenity for residents of Alexandria and the surrounding suburbs.
The converted warehouse apartments that characterise much of Alexandria present a different moving environment from either the Victorian terraces of Redfern and Chippendale or the new towers of Zetland. Warehouse conversions typically have excellent internal dimensions — high ceilings, wide doorways, open floor plans — but the building access is often through industrial-style roller doors or freight lifts that have their own operational characteristics. Billy assesses every Alexandria warehouse conversion during quoting so the access approach is understood before the truck arrives.
The mixed-use character of Alexandria means that residential properties often exist alongside operating businesses. Loading during standard business hours on some Alexandria streets encounters the delivery traffic from the businesses on the same block. The timing and loading position for any Alexandria move on a mixed-use street are confirmed before moving day rather than worked out on arrival.
For the newer apartment buildings in the northern Green Square end of Alexandria, the same managed loading dock access applies as for Zetland and Waterloo — Jet handles building management pre-move coordination for all Green Square-adjacent Alexandria buildings. For the converted warehouse apartments and the established residential streets in the southern end, access is generally more straightforward with better street parking than the northern precinct. We also cover neighbouring Waterloo, Zetland, and Rosebery regularly.
