Beecroft is a suburb 22 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD in the Hornsby Shire, and one of the most distinctively characterful outer North Shore suburbs in Sydney. Its name comes from an unexpected source - Henry Copeland, Minister for Lands in the 1880s and 1890s, named the suburb after the maiden name of both his wives: Hannah and Mary Beecroft, two sisters he married in succession. Many of the suburb's east-west streets carry their names too - Hannah Street, Copeland Road, and Mary Street - alongside other streets named after places around Hull in Yorkshire, where Copeland was born. The railway arrived in 1886 and Sir Henry surveyed the area to assess its residential potential.
Beecroft developed as orchard country before its suburban conversion, and the suburb retains some of that agricultural character in its generous block sizes and the presence of mature trees throughout the street network. It is considered one of the oldest established suburbs in its part of Sydney and the housing stock reflects this - Federation homes on leafy streets, interwar bungalows, and more recent rebuilds on the larger blocks that have attracted rebuilders as the area's desirability has grown. Beecroft shares postcode 2119 with Cheltenham to its east, and the Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust addresses local issues jointly. The M2 Hills Motorway runs along the southern border of the broader area, providing freeway access toward the Hills District and the M1. Pennant Hills High School and Cheltenham Girls High School both serve students from across the two suburbs. Lane Cove National Park is accessible from the upper end of the suburb, and the bushland in the national park sits as a green boundary to the south and south-west.
Beecroft Road is the main road through the suburb and the primary approach for a removal truck.
