Beecroft's name comes from an unexpected source - Henry Copeland, Minister for Lands in the 1880s and 1890s, named the suburb after the maiden name of both his wives: Hannah and Mary Beecroft, two sisters he married in succession. Many of the suburb's east-west streets carry their names too - Hannah Street, Copeland Road, and Mary Street - alongside other streets named after places around Hull in Yorkshire, where Copeland was born. The railway arrived in 1886 and Sir Henry surveyed the area to assess its residential potential.
Beecroft developed as orchard country before its suburban conversion, and the suburb retains some of that agricultural character in its generous block sizes and the presence of mature trees throughout the street network.
