Removalists Pennant Hills.

The pennant was a flag on a hilltop. The suburb that grew around it became one of the outer North Shore's most established communities.

Pennant Hills is a suburb in the Hornsby Shire approximately 18 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD, and one of the older settled areas of the shire. The name has two plausible origins - one theory holds that it refers to a flag or pennant erected on the area's highest point as an early signalling device between the government at Parramatta and the Governor's outer residence; another attributes it to the English botanist Thomas Pennant, a friend of Sir Joseph Banks. The first permanent European settlers arrived in the 1840s, and the suburb's development took off with the railway in 1886 - Pennant Hills station opened on 17 September that year on what is now the Main Northern Line, serving T9 Northern Line services today.

Pennant Hills Road is one of Sydney's major thoroughfares, running through and defining the suburb's character. The residential streets sit on both sides of this arterial, with the suburb's commercial centre - Pennant Hills Marketplace on Hillcrest Road - providing the main retail hub. Pennant Hills Park is a significant community asset on the northern boundary. The suburb is surrounded on two sides by bushland, with Berowra Valley National Park to the north and Lane Cove National Park accessible to the south and east. In August 1912 the federal government opened a Wireless Telegraphy Station in Pennant Hills, the first of its kind in Australia at a national level.

Pennant Hills has two public schools - Pennant Hills Public School established in 1925 and Pennant Hills High School from 1966 - as well as Mount St Benedict College and St Agatha's Catholic Primary School. The suburb also contains the first Danish Church established in Australia, which received a visit from Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in 2005. The housing stock is predominantly freestanding family homes on generous blocks, with some more recent apartment and townhouse development along the Pennant Hills Road corridor.

Pennant Hills Road timing, the residential streets either side, and what a move here involves

Pennant Hills Road is Sydney's main arterial through this part of the outer North Shore and it is busy at almost every hour of the day, not just peak times. Any move with an address on or directly adjacent to Pennant Hills Road needs the truck positioned from a side street - loading on the main road is not practical. Billy identifies the loading position at quoting stage for any Pennant Hills Road address and plans the approach timing to avoid the worst of the arterial congestion.

The residential streets off Pennant Hills Road to the east and west are quiet and wide in most sections, with off-street driveways on most properties. These are the more standard moves - established family homes with good access. The streets that run toward the bushland boundaries on the northern edge of the suburb have more variation in gradient and some properties here have driveways that require the truck to hold on the road. Billy assesses these at quoting for any address in the northern reaches of the suburb close to Pennant Hills Park.

The school precinct around Pennant Hills High School and Mount St Benedict College generates the predictable school-run traffic at drop-off and pick-up times. Any job timed to start during these windows on the streets near the schools is worth adjusting by 30 minutes. Outside school hours the suburb is straightforward to move in. Beecroft is the immediately adjacent suburb to the south-west and many Pennant Hills moves are cross-suburb with Beecroft, Wahroonga, or Hornsby - all corridors Billy knows well.

We also cover neighbouring Wahroonga, Hornsby, Beecroft, Cherrybrook, and Thornleigh regularly.

Pennant Hills Road is one of Sydney's major arterials and is consistently busy throughout the day.
