Captain James Cook landed here on 29 April 1770 and initially named it "Stingray Harbour," after the rays his crew caught and ate. He changed his mind once his expedition's naturalist, Joseph Banks, and Banks's assistant Daniel Solander spent several days ashore cataloguing an extraordinary number of previously unknown plant species - Cook renamed the bay in their honour, and "Botany" stuck. When Governor Phillip arrived with the First Fleet eighteen years later, he found the bay too shallow and exposed to make a workable harbour and moved the entire settlement north to Sydney Cove instead - meaning Botany came remarkably close to being the site of Sydney itself.
