Rockdale sits around 13 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD in the St George area, and its naming history is genuinely more colourful than most. European settlers initially knew the area by a series of names that history has not been kind to - Frog Hollow, Muddy Creek, White Gum Flat, and Gum Tree Flat among them. One St George Historical Society account noted there were "some other names too bad to write down." The area was formally established as the Municipality of West Botany in 1871, covering the land between the Cooks and Georges Rivers.
The current name traces to 1878, when the local postmistress, Mrs Mary Ann Geeves, was asked by the Postal Department to suggest something more dignified. She first proposed Rock-Vale, which was rejected because too many other NSW places already ended in 'vale' and risked confusion. She then suggested Rockdale, a reference to the large hill of rock on the eastern side of the settlement - a site now occupied by the local public school - and the name stuck. It gained further weight in 1884 when the new Illawarra railway line opened a station under the same name, and the municipality itself was formally renamed from West Botany to Rockdale in 1888.
Rockdale Town Hall, designed by local architect Douglas Gardiner and built in 1940 in an art deco style, remains a local landmark alongside the heritage-listed Lydham Hall and Wilsons Farm House, the latter built between 1855 and 1856 by James Wilson. The suburb's diversity is reflected in landmarks like the Al-Zahra Mosque and an olive grove in Jubilee Park honouring the contribution of Greek migrants to the area. King Street has developed into a genuine cafe and grocery strip distinct from the busier Princes Highway shopping precinct around the station, and Rockdale Plaza serves the suburb's southern end.
