Kogarah sits 14 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD and is considered the administrative centre of the St George area. The name is Aboriginal in origin, generally translated as place of bulrushes or place of reeds - a reference to the rushes that grew along the inlets of the Georges River and at the head of Kogarah Bay before European settlement. The spelling took a while to settle: early records show the name written variously as Coggera, Cogerah, and Kuggerah, with the current spelling only becoming standard once the railway line reached the area in the 1880s.
Early land grants in the area went to John Townson, who received over 900 hectares from 1808, centred on what is now Hurstville, and to James Chandler, whose neighbouring grant was centred on Bexley. The district became known for supplying Sydney with fruit, vegetables, and oysters through the nineteenth century. St Paul's Church of England opened on Rocky Point Road - now the Princes Highway - in 1869, built on land donated by William Wolfen, the Swedish Consul to Sydney, who held a substantial estate in the area. The suburb grew up around the church and the Gardeners Arms Hotel, and Kogarah became a municipality in its own right in 1885.
The Moorefield estate, a 24-hectare grant made by Governor Macquarie to Patrick Moore in 1812, later became home to the Moorefield Racecourse, which opened in 1888 and operated for decades before the site was subdivided in the 1950s. Today Jubilee Oval - commonly known as Kogarah Oval - is the home ground for the NRL's St George Illawarra Dragons, and Kogarah's identity is genuinely bound up with the Dragons' history in a way few Sydney suburbs are with their local club. Kogarah Town Centre, the Kogarah School of the Arts on Bowns Road, and a historic fire station on Gray Street round out the suburb's mix of commercial and heritage landmarks.
