Removalists Carlingford.

Named by an Irish comparison - originally Mobbs Hill, home to a submarine memorial and James Ruse Agricultural High School.

Carlingford is a suburb 22 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Parramatta local government area, sitting where Northern Sydney and Western Sydney meet on both sides of Pennant Hills Road. The suburb began as Mobbs Hill, named after William Mobbs, a convict who arrived per the ship Barwell on 18 May 1798 and by 1828 had amassed an estate of over 700 acres renowned for the quality of its citrus fruit. The name Carlingford came officially on 16 July 1883 when the post office at Mobbs Hill was renamed. The name was suggested by orchardist and prominent citizen Frederick Cox, either because one of his employees compared Mobbs Hill to Carlingford in County Louth, Ireland, or because it honoured Lord Carlingford, the British Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies between 1847 and 1860 - both accounts exist and neither is definitively settled.

Carlingford is known across Sydney for two specific landmarks. The first is James Ruse Agricultural High School, established in 1959 on land that includes the heritage-listed Barrengarry House from around 1888, and consistently ranked as one of the most academically selective public schools in New South Wales. The second is the K13 Submarine Memorial on Pennant Hills Road near the Attention Road corner - a park and monument donated by C.A. Freestone, a Parramatta businessman who served on the submarine HMS K13. Designed by architect Douglas Snelling and sculpted by Gerald Lewers, it was unveiled in 1961 and is passed by thousands of motorists daily.

The Carlingford railway line, which opened in 1896 running to Clyde station, was one of the last narrow-gauge suburban railways in Sydney. It closed on 5 January 2020 and is being converted into the Parramatta Light Rail project. This has reshaped activity around the former Carlingford station area and the Pennant Hills Road corridor. The suburb's main commercial areas remain at Carlingford Court on the corner of Pennant Hills and Carlingford Roads, and Carlingford Village on the corner of Pennant Hills and Marsden Roads - the latter on the historic Mobbs Hill site. The suburb has a population of around 28,000 and a culturally diverse, family-oriented character.

Pennant Hills Road, Mobbs Hill gradients, and what moving in Carlingford requires

Pennant Hills Road is the main arterial spine through Carlingford - Cumberland Highway runs north-south and is consistently one of the busiest non-motorway roads in north-west Sydney. It carries through-traffic between Parramatta and the northern suburbs and generates significant congestion at peak times, particularly around the Carlingford Court and Carlingford Village commercial precincts. For any Carlingford address near or directly on Pennant Hills Road, Billy positions the truck from a side street and times the approach around the commercial peak - mid-morning weekday shopping traffic is more problematic than peak-hour commuting for a removal truck trying to hold a position.

Mobbs Hill itself - the ridge that defines the central part of Carlingford - has meaningful gradient. Streets running off the hill on the western and eastern sides can slope away from Pennant Hills Road, and driveways on these streets reflect the topography. The former orchards that defined the suburb's character before postwar residential development gave way to housing on large blocks on generous slopes, and while most of these have been subdivided further, the underlying terrain remains. Billy assesses driveway gradient and truck positioning for any Carlingford address on the hillside sections of the suburb at quoting stage.

The M2 motorway on the northern boundary and the Parramatta Light Rail construction corridor affect access in specific sections of the suburb. The light rail works along the former Carlingford rail corridor involve traffic management changes that evolve as construction stages progress. Billy checks the current construction status for any Carlingford job that involves routes through the affected corridor. For moves heading west toward Parramatta, the M2 and Cumberland Highway combination provides practical routing options that bypass the light rail construction zone.

"Moved from a Carlingford house on the hill behind Mobbs Hill - sloped driveway, big home, 15 years of furniture. Billy had assessed the access beforehand and it all went smoothly."

Common questions about moving in Carlingford

The area was originally called Mobbs Hill after William Mobbs, a convict who established a successful citrus orchard here from 1802. The name Carlingford was officially adopted in 1883, suggested by orchardist Frederick Cox - either after Carlingford in County Louth, Ireland, or in honour of Lord Carlingford, the British Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. Both accounts exist and neither is definitively settled.

It closed on 5 January 2020 and is being converted into the Parramatta Light Rail project. The construction works affect traffic management in parts of the suburb around the former rail corridor.
