Removalists Dural.

An Aboriginal word meaning valley - 36km from the CBD, on the Old Northern Road built by convicts, and still the most genuinely rural suburb in Sydney's commuter belt.

Dural is a semi-rural suburb 36 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD in the Hills District, split across both the Hornsby Shire and The Hills Shire local government areas. The name derives from a Darug Aboriginal word - a surveyor's map from April 1817 shows the area as 'Dooral', and the meaning is generally given as valley or gully, though an alternative translation of smoking hollow tree was introduced by a local rector in the 1940s and was taken from a different language group altogether. The first European land grant in the area went to George Hall in 1819. Dural lies on the Old Northern Road, a historic road built by convict labour between 1825 and 1836 to connect early Sydney with the Hunter Valley - this road is now listed on the World Heritage tentative list as part of the Great North Road convict infrastructure.

Dural became the chief supplier of citrus fruit for most of Australia by the 1890s, with orchards covering the fertile Wianamatta shale ridge tops. By 1907 the NSW Department of Agriculture had established a 40-acre Orchard Experimental Farm on Galston Road, including a program where twenty-one boys from Great Britain - known as the Dreadnought Boys, funded from money originally raised to purchase a dreadnought battleship for Britain - were trained in horticulture. The orchards gave way to hobby farms and acreage residential properties in the postwar period, and Dural has remained a semi-rural suburb where land blocks average around two hectares. It's a place that gave the Australian soap opera Sons and Daughters its setting for the wealthy Hamilton family's home, and where the game show It's a Knockout was filmed from 1985 to 1987 before noise complaints from residents ended the production.

Dural has a population of around 7,900 and a median weekly household income of $2,489 - well above the national median. The suburb has no railway station; bus services connect it to Castle Hill metro and Pennant Hills railway station. Swane's Nurseries, covering 15 hectares, and the Dural Plant Market represent the suburb's continuing horticulture character. St Jude's Church on Old Northern Road, built in sandstone circa 1846, is heritage-listed. The suburb's schools include Pacific Hills Christian School and Redfield College. Properties in Dural range from conventional residential houses in Round Corner at the south-west end of the suburb to large acreage estates with significant distances between the road and the front door.

Old Northern Road, long driveways, and what an acreage Dural move involves

Dural's road network reflects its semi-rural character. Old Northern Road and New Line Road are the main through routes, both of which are rural two-lane roads without the traffic infrastructure of the suburban arterials elsewhere in Sydney. For a removal truck, the approach to Dural depends on which part of the suburb the property is in - Round Corner at the southern end is more accessible, while properties on the northern sections toward Middle Dural and along Old Northern Road are more remote. Billy assesses the specific approach route at quoting stage for any Dural address that involves significant distance from the main roads.

Acreage properties in Dural present the specific challenges that come with any semi-rural move. Long driveways - some hundreds of metres from the road to the house - mean the truck may not be able to reach the front door. Gates, cattle grids, and in some cases unsealed sections of driveway are factors that Billy checks at quoting stage. Beyond the house itself, outbuildings including sheds, workshops, and stables are common in Dural and add substantially to the volume of a move. An acreage Dural move is planned around a full volume assessment rather than a standard bedroom count - Billy visits the property before quoting on any significant acreage job to assess total volume across all structures.

The absence of rail means Dural residents are entirely car-dependent, and the road access toward Castle Hill and Pennant Hills carries commuter traffic that builds during peak hours on the arterials. For a removal truck, the peak on Castle Hill Road and Pennant Hills Road heading toward the suburb is worth timing around on a job that starts from the city side and arrives in Dural. Jobs heading from Dural toward Sydney are generally more straightforward given the direction of the commuter flow. The semi-rural character of the suburb means weekend traffic is light and weekday moves outside peak hours are the most efficient option.

The Old Northern Road is a historic road built by convict labour between 1825 and 1836 to connect Sydney with the Hunter Valley. It passes through Dural and is part of the suburb's main road network. It's a two-lane rural road without the infrastructure of suburban arterials, and Billy plans the truck approach accordingly for any property that accesses from the Old Northern Road.
