Brookvale takes its name from Brookvale House, a residence built in 1883 by Sydney Alexander Malcolm on land that had first been farmed from 1836, when 64 hectares were granted to William Frederick Parker. Before that, the area was known simply as Greendale. Brookvale House itself was eventually sold in 1961 to the Hooker Investment Corporation, clearing the way for the construction of Warringah Mall - now the largest shopping complex on the Northern Beaches. The suburb's postwar transformation into an industrial centre was formalised when the Brookvale Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in October 1954, and around 70 factories had moved into the area by the mid-1960s.
Brookvale Oval - now known by its sponsorship name, 4 Pines Park - opened in 1911 and has been the home ground of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles since 1947, making it one of the genuine sporting institutions of the Northern Beaches. Today Brookvale sits at the industrial and commercial heart of the region - Warringah Mall, the business parks, the warehouses and trade suppliers running alongside residential streets.
