Forestville is a Northern Beaches suburb in the Forest District that developed primarily as a residential area in the post-war period. It sits between Frenchs Forest to the north, Davidson and Killarney Heights to the west, and Lane Cove National Park to the south. Lionel Watts Reserve is one of the suburb's most significant community spaces - a large recreational reserve used for sport and community activities. The suburb has a number of primary schools, and the school zone streets around these generate the predictable school-run traffic at pickup and drop-off times on weekdays. Glen Street Theatre, which serves as a major cultural venue for the whole Forest District, is actually located in Belrose rather than Forestville despite being commonly associated with the area.

Warringah Road is the main arterial road through Forestville and carries substantial through-traffic at peak times as a connector between the Northern Beaches and the wider Sydney road network. The residential streets that branch off it are generally quieter, with a mix of older post-war family homes on standard suburban blocks and some more recent infill. Forestville's housing tends to sit on larger blocks than the suburbs closer to the city, with off-street driveways on most properties. The suburb has a stable, long-term residential character - it is not an area with heavy turnover, but when families do move, they often have significant volumes of furniture from long-term occupation.
