The exact origin of Castle Hill's name is genuinely disputed. One theory holds it simply describes the fine views from the hills in the district, first seen by Governor Phillip on an exploratory trip in 1791. Governor King established a government farm here in 1801 and was recording the name "Castle Hill" in official correspondence by March 1802. A second theory points to a property called "The Hermitage," built on the ridge by a French baron granted 200 acres in 1802, which locals reportedly nicknamed "The Castle" - and from there, the hill it sat on. Either way, the farm Phillip and King established eventually covered an enormous 34,539 acres, stretching from what is now West Pennant Hills to Maroota.
The suburb's most dramatic early moment came in 1804, when 266 Irish convicts working the government farm staged an uprising - stealing what weapons they could find with the intention of marching on Parramatta and overthrowing British authority in the colony entirely. The plot was betrayed before it could properly begin, and the rebellion was put down by colonial forces. Today Castle Hill is the genuine heart of the Hills District - large family homes on generous blocks, the Castle Towers shopping centre, and a community that has held a working agricultural show, the Castle Hill Agricultural Show, every year since the 1880s. Nobel Prize-winning author Patrick White lived on Showground Road until 1968 and used the then-rural area as the setting for several of his works.
