Curl Curl's name is thought to come from the Dharug phrase curial curial, generally translated as "river of life." For decades the local lagoon names were actually swapped from where they should have been - what is now called Curl Curl Lagoon was originally Harbord Lagoon, while the lagoon now known as Manly Lagoon was the original Curl Curl Lagoon. A council renaming program in the 1980s finally corrected the mismatch to reflect the lagoons' true locations. The beach itself splits into North and South Curl Curl, each with its own surf club - South Curl Curl SLSC dates to 1918, North Curl Curl SLSC to 1922 - and each with its own ocean rock pool that locals will tell you is the better of the two, depending on which end of the beach they grew up on.
Curl Curl sits between Dee Why and Freshwater - one of the Northern Beaches' most relaxed and community-driven suburbs. The housing mix is mostly family homes and older cottages on generous blocks, with some units closer to the beachfront. It is the kind of suburb where people move in and stay for years, which means when a move does happen, it tends to be a full one.

Beachside parking gets competitive quickly, some of the older cottages have access quirks worth planning around, and the streets closest to the beach fill fast on a weekend morning.
