A name older than Parramatta itself. The sandstone quarried here built Parramatta Gaol and Lake Parramatta dam. Known as Jerusalem Rocks before that.
North Rocks is a suburb 26 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD split across two council areas - the majority falls within the City of Parramatta following the 2016 council amalgamations, while streets north of the M2 Hills Motorway sit within The Hills Shire. The name North Rocks is one of the oldest European place names in the Sydney basin, predating the name Parramatta itself - the area was originally known as Rosehill, and North Rocks was already in use when Rosehill was renamed. In 1789 Governor Phillip reserved large areas north and west of Rosehill for government stock grazing, incorporating what is now the North Rocks area.
The name derives from the large sandstone formations that historically dominated the landscape. The area was also known as Jerusalem and Jerusalem Rocks - the biblical reference came from the rocky hills that reminded early settlers of the terrain around Jerusalem. In the early 1800s North Rocks was one of the most popular picnic destinations around Parramatta, visited for its bush scenery and sandstone outcrops. The sandstone itself was quarried here for construction - the North Rocks sandstone was used to build Parramatta Gaol and the Lake Parramatta dam wall, both significant colonial infrastructure projects. Muirfield High School's agricultural program runs from the historic Barclay farm, maintaining a connection to the suburb's rural past.
North Rocks today is a quiet residential suburb centred on North Rocks Shopping Centre and the Barclay Road M2 bus station, which provides express services to the CBD, Castle Hill, Macquarie Park, Blacktown, and Norwest Business Park. The steep Barclay Road descent from the ridge toward Parramatta is one of the suburb's defining topographical features. The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children on Barclay Road is a significant local institution. North Rocks Public School has an Opportunity Class, drawing families from across the area for its selective primary program.
Barclay Road is the main north-south spine through North Rocks and its steepness - dropping from the ridge down toward Parramatta - is the defining access feature for any move in the suburb. Properties on the ridge sections have elevated driveways and good views; properties on the lower sections of Barclay Road and the streets running off it are more straightforward to access but the road itself carries through-traffic between the M2 and Parramatta. Billy assesses driveway gradient for any North Rocks address on the steeper ridge sections at quoting stage.
The M2 Hills Motorway forms the northern boundary of the main residential section of North Rocks. The Barclay Road M2 bus interchange near the motorway is the suburb's main public transport hub. For moves heading toward Castle Hill, Parramatta, or Macquarie Park, the M2 provides fast freeway access in both directions. The split council boundary - Parramatta south of the M2, The Hills Shire north of it - occasionally affects parking permits and skip bin approvals; Billy checks which council applies at quoting stage for any address near the boundary.
North Rocks Golf Club and its course occupy a significant portion of the suburb's land area on the western side. Adjacent to the golf course, the residential streets are quiet and well-established, with larger homes on generous blocks typical of a suburb that developed primarily in the 1960s through 1980s. The RIDC on Barclay Road is worth knowing about for any move near the school - traffic around drop-off and pick-up times on Barclay Road can be heavier than the surrounding streets suggest.
We also cover neighbouring Carlingford, Epping, and Baulkham Hills regularly.

The 2016 NSW council amalgamations placed most of North Rocks within the City of Parramatta council. Streets north of the M2 Hills Motorway fall within The Hills Shire, which was not amalgamated in the same process. The practical effect is that some North Rocks addresses have different councils for parking permits, skip bins, and development applications depending on which side of the M2 they sit.
Barclay Road drops steeply from the ridge toward Parramatta, and properties on the ridge sections can have elevated driveways that require careful truck positioning. Billy assesses the gradient and safe parking point for any North Rocks address on the steeper sections at quoting stage. The lower sections of Barclay Road and the streets running east and west from it are more straightforward.
We charge by the hour. Ridge driveways on Barclay Road add positioning time; the established residential streets away from the ridge are more straightforward. Get in touch for a clear estimate.
