Removalists North Epping.

An exclave of Hornsby Shire, cut off from the rest of it by Lane Cove National Park. Whale Rock is the landmark. The Great North Walk passes through.

North Epping is a suburb 19 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD in the Hornsby Shire, though it has an administrative oddity that sets it apart: it is an exclave of Hornsby Shire, geographically separated from the rest of the Shire by Lane Cove National Park to its south and west. North Epping relies on the neighbouring suburb of Epping - which is in a completely different council area, City of Parramatta - for most of its infrastructure including transport connections, libraries, and the public swimming pool. The suburb shares postcode 2121 with Epping to its south, which often leads to addresses in the two suburbs being confused despite being governed by different local authorities.

The area between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers was originally Wallumedegal people's country. In 1792 Governor Arthur Phillip began granting land parcels to marines, referring to the area on maps as the Field of Mars - named after the Roman god of war, probably for the military connection to the marine grantees. North Epping is part of this original Field of Mars territory. One of the suburb's well-known landmarks is Whale Rock, a large sandstone outcrop on the edge of the upper section of Lane Cove National Park. The Great North Walk, the long-distance trail between Sydney and Newcastle, passes through North Epping, linking to South Turramurra, Marsfield, and West Pymble along its route.

North Epping is a leafy, quiet suburb with a predominantly residential character and a strong bushland feel. The upper section of Lane Cove National Park forms the southern and western boundary of the suburb, giving North Epping its enclosed-by-bush feeling that is unusual for a suburb this close to a major city. Malton Road is the main road running through the suburb. North Epping is home to All Saints Anglican Church on Malton Road. The suburb has a small but settled residential population of around 3,500 and a high proportion of freestanding homes on generous blocks.

Malton Road, national park boundary streets, and what moving in North Epping involves

Malton Road is the main road through North Epping and the primary access route for any removal truck. It connects the suburb to Epping to the south and the surrounding area. Access to North Epping from the Hornsby Shire direction - the council area it belongs to - requires going through or around Lane Cove National Park, which means most practical access is from the south via Epping. Billy approaches North Epping jobs via Malton Road from the Epping direction.

The streets on the western and southern edges of North Epping that border Lane Cove National Park are the most specific in terms of access planning. Some of these streets effectively dead-end at the national park boundary, limiting turning space for a large truck. Properties in these sections can have longer driveways and vegetation over the road that affects clearance. Billy checks the specific street at quoting stage for any North Epping address near the park boundary, where the satellite image can look very different from the actual road conditions.

The suburban streets in the main body of North Epping away from the park boundary are more standard - postwar family homes on good-sized blocks with off-street driveways and wide enough residential streets for a removal truck. The suburb's reliance on Epping for services means most moves to or from North Epping naturally route through the Epping area, and the Epping road access points are the ones Billy plans around. The suburb's quiet, enclosed character means traffic is light outside the school run and commuter windows.
