Moving Over Christmas and New Year in Sydney

Written by Billy Byrne - June 2026

December and January is genuinely one of our busiest stretches, and it catches a lot of people off guard. Spring is Sydney's biggest property-selling season, and with settlement periods typically running six to twelve weeks, that spring listing rush turns directly into a Christmas and New Year moving rush. Add school holidays into the mix - the easiest window for families to move without pulling kids out of term - and you get the single most in-demand period of the year for removalists.

If your move is landing somewhere in this window, here is what actually makes it different from a move at any other time of year, and what is worth sorting out now rather than in the week before.

Why this period is so busy

It comes down to two things stacking on top of each other. First, the property market - spring listings settling in December and January create a genuine surge in demand right when everyone else is trying to wind down for the year. Second, school holidays - families specifically choose this window because it is the only multi-week stretch where a move will not disrupt a school term.

The result is that good removalists book out well ahead of the date itself, not just in the final week. If your settlement or lease date falls anywhere between early December and the end of January, the planning needs to start earlier than it would for a quieter month.

Book earlier than you think you need to

Six to eight weeks ahead is a sensible target for this period, and earlier again if your date falls in the final two weeks of December specifically, when availability tightens further as crews take their own leave. This is not really about price - it is about choice. The companies worth using are the ones that fill up first, and once they are full, the options that remain are whoever still has a truck free, not necessarily who you would have picked.

If you have a dual settlement - moving out of one property and into another on the same day - this matters even more, since you are locked into one specific date with no flexibility to shift it.

The heat is a genuine factor, not just a comfort issue

Sydney summers regularly push past 35 degrees in December and January, and moving heavy furniture in that heat is a real safety consideration, not just an inconvenience. An early morning start beats the heat for everyone involved - the crew working harder in cooler conditions, and your furniture spending less time sitting in a hot truck. Leather, timber veneer, and anything with glue joints genuinely do not love extended heat exposure, so a long delay on the truck on a 38-degree day is worth avoiding where you can plan around it.

Keep water on hand for the crew and for yourself. It sounds obvious until you are six hours into a move and nobody has thought about it since 9am.

Public holiday surcharges - ask directly, do not assume

If your move falls on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, or another public holiday, expect a surcharge from most removalists. Staff are entitled to penalty rates under Australian award conditions on these days, and that cost gets reflected in the rate rather than absorbed. This is standard across the industry, not specific to any one company - the same way a cafe charges more for your coffee on Anzac Day. Ask whoever you book with exactly what their public holiday rate is and how it is calculated before you confirm anything, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Utility and service closures can delay your settle-in

This is the part people forget about until it bites them. Electricity, gas, and internet providers often run on reduced staff over the Christmas to New Year stretch, and connection requests lodged late can genuinely slip into January. If your move falls in this window, get your utility connections organised at least two weeks ahead rather than assuming they will sort themselves out once you have the keys. Read our moving house checklist for the full list of what to organise and when.

If you have kids, plan the day around them

School holidays mean the kids are home, which is exactly when you do not want them underfoot while a crew is carrying a dining table through a doorway. If you can, arrange a play date, a grandparent, or even just a few hours at a park for moving day itself. It genuinely makes the day safer and less stressful for everyone, including the kids, who generally do not enjoy standing around a half-packed house any more than you do.

What we do differently over this period

Billy and Jet plan Christmas and New Year jobs the same way they plan any other move - properly, with the access and timing worked out before the day - but we are upfront early about availability once this period starts filling up. If your date is set, get in touch as soon as you can rather than waiting until the week itself. We would rather tell you honestly that a date is tight than have you find out after everyone else is already booked.

Frequently asked questions

Spring is Sydney's busiest property-selling season, and with typical 6 to 12 week settlement periods, that listing surge turns into a December and January moving surge. School holidays also make this the easiest time for families to move without disrupting the school term, adding to demand.

Book six to eight weeks ahead if possible, and earlier if your move falls in the final two weeks of December. Reputable removalists get booked out well in advance for this period, and leaving it late genuinely limits your options rather than just costing more.

Many removalists charge a public holiday surcharge to cover penalty rates, since staff are entitled to higher pay under Australian award conditions on days like Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Ask any removalist directly what their specific public holiday rate is before booking.

Confirm your removalist's operating hours over the holiday period, since some close entirely between Christmas and New Year. Also confirm utility connection dates early - electricity, gas, and internet providers often run reduced staff over the same period, which can delay your connection at the new property.
