Pool tables are one of those items that look manageable until you actually try to move one. They're heavy, they're built in awkward sections, and getting them wrong risks cracking the slate, tearing the cloth, or leaving you with a table that plays badly for years afterwards. Here's what an actual pool table move involves.

Why pool tables are deceptively hard to move

A pool table isn't one solid object - it's a frame, a bed (slate or MDF), a cloth stretched tight over that bed, rails around the edge, and pockets. The weight is concentrated and awkward, the cloth can tear or snag if handled carelessly, and the whole thing generally won't fit through a standard doorway assembled. None of that is obvious until you're standing in front of one trying to work out how to get it out of the room.

Slate bed vs MDF bed - genuinely different jobs

A full-size slate table is the serious end of this job. The bed is made of three slate sections, each of which is extremely heavy - individually often 70 to 100 kilograms - and genuinely fragile if dropped or flexed. These have to be unbolted, wrapped, and carried separately, which is a two-or-three-person task per piece, not something to attempt solo. The rails come off, the cloth needs careful handling if it's being reused, and the whole thing needs to go back together and be relevelled at the other end.

An MDF or particleboard bed table - common on cheaper or older tables - is lighter and sometimes comes apart in one or two larger pieces rather than three heavy slate sections. It's still bulky and still needs care, but it's a meaningfully lighter job than a genuine slate table.

What the move actually involves, step by step

We photograph the table before anything comes apart - rail positions, pocket alignment, cable routing if it's a coin-op - so reassembly matches exactly how it was. Balls, cues, and accessories get packed separately. The rails come off first, generally labelled so they go back in the same position. The cloth is either carefully removed and protected for reuse, or in many cases it's simply due for replacement after a big move anyway - worth deciding in advance rather than being surprised. Slate sections are unbolted, wrapped individually, and transported flat or per the manufacturer's original orientation to avoid cracking. At the destination, the frame goes back together, slate is repositioned and bolted, and the whole table gets relevelled with a spirit level and shims before the cloth goes back on.

Does the table need releveling after every move?

Almost always, yes - similar to how a piano needs retuning after being moved. Even a carefully executed move shifts the frame and the slate seams slightly, and a table that isn't relevelled will play noticeably differently - balls drifting toward one corner, an uneven roll. It's a standard part of a proper reassembly, not an optional extra, and it's worth checking whether the cloth needs replacing at the same time if it's been on the table for a few years.
