A move does not start on moving day. It starts six to eight weeks before, when the decisions and bookings you make determine how smoothly moving day actually goes. This checklist is structured as a timeline - not a flat list of things to do, but a sequence that makes sense in the order things actually need to happen.

Eight weeks out

Book your removalist. The best operators in Sydney get booked out quickly, particularly for weekend moves and for moves in January, June-July (end of school term), and December. If you are moving at a popular time - a Saturday in late January or the last weekend of June - ten or twelve weeks is safer. Moving companies book in order of enquiry.

If you are renting, give your landlord notice as required by your lease - typically two to four weeks but check your agreement specifically.

Start decluttering. Every item you choose not to move is money saved on the hourly rate and time saved on moving day. Be honest about what you actually use versus what has been in the garage for three years. This is the moment to sell, donate, or dispose of things rather than pay to move them.

Research storage options if there is a gap between your move-out and move-in dates. Six weeks out

Order them online or source them from your removalist. Uniform-sized boxes make loading significantly more efficient - resist the temptation to use random grocery store boxes for everything.

Start packing rooms you use least. Spare bedrooms, storage cupboards, the study, seasonal items in the garage. These can be packed weeks in advance without affecting daily life.

Notify the important parties of your change of address: bank and financial institutions, Medicare and Services Australia, the ATO, your employer, super fund, insurance providers, and any subscriptions or services billed to your home address.

Redirect your mail through Australia Post. Set this up six weeks in advance to ensure it is active by your move date.

Four weeks out

Arrange disconnection and reconnection of utilities - electricity, gas, internet, and water. Utility providers in Sydney typically need two to four weeks notice. Book the reconnection at the new address for the day before you move in if possible, so everything is working when you arrive.

If you need a packing service, book this now. Packing assistance is often more in demand than the moving itself and fills quickly.

Confirm your moving date with the removalist. Get the job specifics confirmed in writing - date, time, addresses, what is included, and the payment terms.

Two weeks out

Pack the majority of the house. By this point, only the kitchen items you use daily, your daily clothing, bathroom essentials, and work equipment should remain unpacked.

Clean out the fridge and pantry. Use up perishables. Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before the move - a wet freezer on a truck is a problem.

Confirm parking and access at both addresses. If your new property has strata management, check whether you need to book a moving time slot or goods lift. Notify your children's schools of the change of address and any change of enrolment if you are moving school catchments.

One week out

Pack the kitchen down to essentials. Keep out one set of plates, cups, and cutlery per person for the week, plus the minimum cooking equipment. Everything else gets packed.

Prepare an essentials box or bag that travels with you rather than on the truck. This contains everything you need for the first 24 hours: phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes, toilet paper, basic kitchen items, kids' essentials, valuables, and important documents. This box goes in your car, not on the truck.

Moving day

Have all boxes sealed and labelled before the removalists arrive. An unsealed box on moving morning delays the start and costs time on the hourly rate.

Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard, wardrobe, and outdoor space before the truck leaves. Check the shed, under beds, in the hot water cupboard, behind doors. The items most commonly left behind are: the contents of high shelves, things stored under stairs, items in the laundry, and outdoor furniture stored at the side of the house.

At the new property, be present when the truck arrives and direct the removalists on where each piece of furniture and each box goes. This saves significant time versus having things put in random rooms and moved later.

Check the old property one final time after the truck departs. Then hand back the keys.

After the move

Update your address with the electoral roll, vehicle registration and licence, and any remaining services you have not already notified.
