A move does not start on moving day. It starts six to eight weeks before, when the decisions and bookings you make determine how smoothly moving day actually goes. This checklist is structured as a timeline - not a flat list of things to do, but a sequence that makes sense in the order things actually need to happen. Tick items off as you go - your progress is saved automatically, so it'll be here next time you check back.

Eight weeks out
The best operators in Sydney get booked out quickly, particularly for weekend moves and for moves in January, June-July, and December. Eight weeks is not too early - for a popular time like a Saturday in late January, ten or twelve weeks is safer. See our guide on how far in advance to book a removalist.
Give your landlord notice as required by your lease - typically two to four weeks, but check your agreement specifically.
Every item you choose not to move is money saved on the hourly rate and time saved on moving day. Be honest about what you actually use versus what's been in the garage for three years - sell, donate, or dispose of it rather than pay to move it.
If there's a gap between your move-out and move-in dates, our storage service can be coordinated alongside the move so belongings go directly from property to storage without extra handling. Use our moving cost calculator to get a rough sense of budget before you start collecting quotes.
Six weeks out
Order them online or source them from your removalist. Uniform-sized boxes make loading significantly more efficient - resist the temptation to use random grocery store boxes for everything. Our room-by-room packing guide covers what to pack first and how to label properly.
Spare bedrooms, storage cupboards, the study, seasonal items in the garage. These can be packed weeks in advance without affecting daily life.
Bank and financial institutions, Medicare and Services Australia, the ATO, your employer, super fund, insurance providers, and any subscriptions billed to your home address.
Set this up through Australia Post six weeks in advance to ensure it's active by your move date.
Four weeks out
Electricity, gas, internet, and water. Sydney providers typically need two to four weeks notice. Book reconnection at the new address for the day before you move in if possible, so everything's working when you arrive.
Packing assistance is often more in demand than the move itself and fills quickly. Book ours here if you need it.
Get the job specifics confirmed - date, time, addresses, what's included, and the payment terms.
A four-year-old on moving morning when everyone is stressed and carrying furniture is a recipe for a long day. Same for pets - arrange somewhere for them to go. See our guide on moving house with kids for the specifics.
Two weeks out
By this point, only the kitchen items you use daily, your daily clothing, bathroom essentials, and work equipment should remain unpacked.
Use up perishables. Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before the move - a wet freezer on a truck is a problem.
If your new property has strata management, check whether you need to book a moving time slot or goods lift. Jet handles this for any apartment move we do, but it's worth knowing about in advance - some strata buildings restrict moving to weekday business hours.
Update the change of address, and any change of enrolment if you're moving school catchments.
One week out
Keep out one set of plates, cups, and cutlery per person for the week, plus the minimum cooking equipment. Everything else gets packed.
Phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes, toilet paper, basic kitchen items, kids' essentials, valuables, and important documents. This box travels in your car, not on the truck.
Bed frames, bookshelves, desks, outdoor settings. Billy and Jet handle disassembly and reassembly as part of the move, but getting started on the straightforward pieces saves time on the day.
Moving day
An unsealed box on moving morning delays the start and costs time on the hourly rate.
Check every room, cupboard, wardrobe, and outdoor space. The items most commonly left behind: high shelves, under stairs, the laundry, and outdoor furniture at the side of the house.
Be present when the truck arrives and direct us on where each piece of furniture and each box goes. This saves significant time versus having things put in random rooms and moved later.
After the truck departs, do one last check, then hand back the keys.
After the move
The electoral roll, vehicle registration and licence, and any remaining services you haven't already notified.
Reviews make a genuine difference to small businesses and help other people find a reliable operator. If you moved with us and were happy with the job, we'd genuinely appreciate it - leave us a review here. It takes two minutes. Frequently asked questions
Start packing at least four weeks before your move date. Begin with the rooms you use least - spare bedrooms, garage, and storage cupboards - and leave the kitchen and bedrooms until the final few days.
Book your removalist, give your landlord notice if renting, begin decluttering, and research storage options if there is a gap between your move-out and move-in dates.
Australia Post recommends setting up mail redirection at least two weeks before your move, though six weeks is better to ensure it is active and running smoothly by moving day.
Electricity, gas, internet, and water. Most Sydney utility providers need two to four weeks notice for disconnection at your current address and reconnection at the new one. Book reconnection for the day before you move in.
Update your address with the electoral roll, vehicle registration, driver licence, and any remaining services. Leave a Google review for your removalist if the job went well.
