Donating Our Time to Mates Fund's Charity Events

Written by Billy Byrne - June 2026

Worth being upfront about this one: Mates Fund is a charity I personally run, based in Narrabeen, supporting community-led development and crisis response in Fiji and Pakistan. It's entirely volunteer-run, and TMC has donated time to help with their fundraising events - for free. This isn't an independent business that found us and chose to work with us, it's our own time going toward something I care about. We still think it's worth writing up honestly, because the work itself is a genuine look at what we can do beyond a standard house move.

What the work actually involved

Charity fundraising events run on volunteers, and volunteers are usually stretched thin - that's standard for the sector, not specific to Mates Fund. At their events, we've helped assemble and disassemble furniture, and moved furniture around the event space as the layout needed to change through the night. It's the same skill set as a house move - heavy lifting, careful handling, working efficiently under time pressure - just applied to a fundraiser instead of a removal.

Why it mattered on the day

Mates Fund is run entirely by volunteers, working across Australia and overseas, and chronically short on hands at exactly the moments they need the most help - again, standard for a charity this size. Having two extra people who could move quickly and handle furniture properly, without needing direction or supervision, meant the event team could focus on running the night rather than rearranging chairs. It's a genuinely common problem for small charities, and a fairly simple one for us to help solve.

What this looked like in practice

The brief was simple and the execution wasn't: get the space functional before guests arrive, then adjust it on the fly as the night's events needed - and do all of it without getting in the way of an event already running on a tight schedule. We treated it the same way we'd treat any paying job - properly, on time, and without cutting corners just because nobody was charging for it.

Why we keep doing it

This isn't a one-off. We keep helping at Mates Fund events because the need is real and ongoing, and because it's a straightforward way to put genuinely useful skills toward something outside the business. If you run a charity or community event in Sydney and are short on hands for setup or pack-down, it's worth getting in touch - we can't promise free work for every request, but we're always happy to have the conversation.
