What to Expect on Moving Day - And How to Make It Faster and Cheaper.

Written by Billy Byrne - June 2026

Most of the stress around moving day comes from not knowing what to expect - and a lot of the cost comes from being underprepared. The good news is that there are specific things you can do before we arrive that will make the day significantly faster, smoother, and cheaper. I am going to walk you through the whole thing.

Why preparation directly affects what you pay

Before I get into the day itself, this is worth understanding. Most removalists charge by the hour. That means the faster the job goes, the less you pay. And the single biggest factor in how fast a job goes is how well prepared everything is when we arrive.

Here is a simple example. If you have ten loose items sitting on a shelf, we pick them up one at a time. Ten trips. If those same ten items are packed into one box, we pick it up once. One trip. That is ten times faster - and on an hourly rate, that time difference adds up quickly across an entire home.

This is why packing properly before moving day is not just about protecting your belongings. It is about saving money.

Tell your removalist everything upfront

This is one of the most overlooked parts of booking a move and it directly affects how well the day runs.

Before we arrive we need to know - how many rooms, what are the large or heavy items, is there a piano or a pool table, are there stairs at either end, is there lift access and does it need to be booked, is the driveway steep, is street parking restricted, is there a long carry from the front door to where the truck can park.

If we know about these things in advance we can plan around them - bring the right equipment, allow the right amount of time, book what needs to be booked, and arrive fully prepared. If we find out about them on the morning of the move, we are managing surprises instead of executing a plan. That costs time, which costs money, and it is entirely avoidable.

A good removalist will ask most of these questions when you get your quote. But if they do not ask, volunteer the information anyway. The more we know before the day, the better the day goes.

Should you use two removalists or three?

This is something most people do not think about when they are booking but it is worth understanding because it can actually reduce your total bill even though the hourly rate is higher.

Here is how it works. When there are two removalists on a job, one is packing the truck while the other is bringing items out from the property. That means at any given moment, only one person is actually moving things out of the house.

Add a third person and the dynamic changes significantly. Now one person is packing the truck, one is bringing items to the truck, and one is still inside the property preparing the next load. The pipeline never stops. The job can move up to twice as fast as a two-person crew on the same property.

On a large home - anything with three or more bedrooms, a full garage, or a lot of furniture - the time saved with a third person often more than covers the additional hourly cost. You pay more per hour but for fewer hours, and the total bill comes down.

When you get a quote from us, ask about the three-person option. For the right job it is genuinely the better value choice.

The night before

Everything should be packed, sealed, and labelled before we arrive. Not mostly done. Not almost ready. Completely finished.

Every box should be sealed with tape - not just folded shut - and labelled clearly with the destination room. Not just "kitchen" but something like "kitchen - everyday plates" or "bedroom 2 - books." The more specific the label, the less double handling happens at the other end. When a box lands in the right room the first time, it does not need to be moved again.

Disassemble what you can. Bed frames, flat-pack furniture, large shelving units - if you can get these broken down the night before, we are not spending your time and money doing it on the day.

Clear the access at both ends. If there is a loading zone near your property that needs to be kept clear, move your own car somewhere else the night before. If your building requires a lift booking, make sure it is done before the day of the move. If there is a gate code or building access we need, have it ready.

Set aside anything that needs special handling - fragile items, artwork, electronics - and flag them when we do our walkthrough. We handle these separately and it is better to know about them upfront than discover them mid-load.

Morning of the move

We call ahead before we arrive - usually 20 to 30 minutes out - so you know exactly when to expect us. We aim to arrive at the agreed start time every time.

When we get there, the first thing we do is walk through the property with you. We want to see what is moving, identify anything that needs particular care, and confirm the access situation at both ends. This takes about five to ten minutes and it is time well spent.

Loading

Once we have the plan, loading begins. Furniture is wrapped in blankets before it goes on the truck - nothing moves unprotected. Large items are disassembled where needed. Boxes are stacked by weight and size. Fragile items go last and are packed in so they cannot shift in transit.

We work efficiently but we do not rush. Rushing is how things get damaged, which ends up costing everyone more. If you have everything packed, labelled, and ready to go, loading moves significantly faster than a job where we are waiting for packing to finish or hunting down loose items.

Unloading and setup

At the destination we do a quick walkthrough so you can tell us where things are going. Furniture goes to the rooms you specify. Boxes go to the rooms labelled on them - which is why labelling matters. A correctly labelled box lands once and stays there. An unlabelled box gets put somewhere and moved again later, by you, after we have left.

Beds and disassembled furniture are reassembled before we leave. If something does not fit where you planned, just tell us - we would rather move it twice than leave you with a problem.

Once everything is in and you are satisfied, we do a final walkthrough together to make sure nothing has been missed.

What to have ready on the day

Everything packed, sealed, and labelled before we arrive. All access challenges disclosed when you book. Loading zones clear at both ends. Lift bookings confirmed if applicable. Keys and building access codes ready. Any fragile or special items flagged in advance. Payment ready for the end of the job.

What if something goes wrong?

It is rare but it happens. The right removalist handles it honestly and without argument. We are insured through QBE and any legitimate damage claim is handled properly. We do not disappear when things get complicated.
