How to Choose a Removalist in Sydney - What to Actually Look For.

Written by Billy Byrne - June 2026

There are hundreds of removalists operating in Sydney. Some are excellent. Some will quote you a low rate and make up for it with surprise charges at the end. And some - more than most people realise - will cause you genuine problems on the day that you will spend weeks trying to resolve.

I have been doing this long enough to know what separates a good operator from a bad one. Here is the honest version - not a generic checklist, but the things that actually matter.

Are they insured - and can they prove it?

This is the first question to ask and the one most people forget until something goes wrong. Any removalist worth hiring carries two types of insurance - public liability, which covers damage to your property during the move, and goods in transit insurance, which covers your belongings if something is damaged on the truck.

Ask for proof before you book. A legitimate operator will send you their certificate without hesitation. If they get vague, say they are covered but cannot produce documentation, or tell you to stop worrying about it - walk away.

At The Movers Company we are insured through QBE and can provide our certificate before we arrive on the day.

Do they have recent, genuine reviews?

Not a handful of five-star reviews from two years ago. Look for consistent, recent reviews across multiple jobs on Google - the most trustworthy platform because accounts are verified and harder to manipulate.

Look for reviews that mention specific details - the removalist's name, how they handled a tricky piece of furniture, whether they arrived on time. A review that says "Jet was early, wrapped everything carefully, and had our three-bedroom house done in four hours" tells you something real. A review that just says "great service" tells you almost nothing.

At The Movers Company we currently have 15 Google reviews and are adding more every month. Every review is from a real customer and we can put you in touch with past clients if you want to ask questions directly.

Is the pricing transparent?

This is where a lot of operators catch people out. The two most common traps are:

Hourly rate billing that starts from their depot, not from when they arrive at your door. Some removalists add 30 to 45 minutes of travel time to every job without telling you upfront. Ask specifically - when does the clock start and when does it stop?

Hidden extras that appear on the invoice at the end - fuel levies, truck fees, minimum charges, stair levies, heavy item fees. Ask for a full breakdown of every charge before you agree to anything.

At The Movers Company the hourly rate starts when we arrive and stops when we are done. We tell you every potential charge upfront. No deposit required and no invoice surprises.

Can you actually communicate with them?

This sounds like a small thing but it matters enormously. We have heard stories from customers who booked a removalist only to find on the day that none of the crew spoke enough English to understand basic instructions - which room does this go in, be careful with that piece, can you put this down here. When you cannot communicate clearly with the people handling your belongings, mistakes happen and there is no way to course correct in real time.

When you contact a removalist, note how they communicate from the very first interaction. Are they clear and responsive? Do they answer your questions directly? Can you actually have a conversation with them? That first phone call tells you a lot about how they will operate on the day.

How quickly do they respond?

A removalist who takes two days to return a call is showing you exactly how they will communicate if something goes wrong. A removalist who picks up the phone or replies within the hour is someone you can rely on.

Jet and I get back to every enquiry the same day - usually within the hour. If we are on a job we call back as soon as we are done.

Red flags that should send you running

We have heard some genuinely alarming stories from customers who came to us after a bad experience. A few things that have actually happened and should be deal-breakers if you encounter them:

No-shows on moving day with no warning and no way to reach anyone. This is more common than it should be, particularly with operators who take last-minute bookings without proper organisation.

Removalists who start drinking on the job. It sounds extreme but we have heard this from multiple customers. If you smell alcohol on arrival, end the job immediately and do not pay.

Crew members who walk off the job halfway through - sometimes over a disagreement with each other, sometimes because another job came up. Your belongings end up half-loaded on a truck or scattered across your old property with no one to finish the move.

Damage that gets disputed or ignored because the operator has no insurance and no intention of paying for anything.

Any operator that does not have an ABN listed on their website or quote is not a legitimately registered business. Do not book them.

What actually matters most

Show up on time. Handle belongings carefully. Charge what you quoted. Communicate clearly. That is it. It is not complicated - but it narrows the field considerably.
